Berezinskii-Thouless-Kosterlitz Transition in a Two-Dimensional Atomic Gas
نویسنده
چکیده
We introduce the concepts of Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition and quasi longrange order in the context of the 2D electron gas model. We then apply this framework to 2D superfluidity to obtain the superfluid transition temperature. Finally, we review the recent experimental work of Hadzibabic et al. which observes BKT transition in a 2D trapped Rb gas. Thermal de Broglie wavelength at the critical temperature is reported to be ρCλ 2 = 6 ± 2, in comparison to the theoretical result of ρSλ 2 = 4, where ρC is the condensate density and ρS is the superfluid density.

We have measured the critical atom number in a harmonically trapped two-dimensional (2D) Bose gas of rubidium atoms at different temperatures. We found this number to be about five times higher than predicted by the semi-classical theory of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in the ideal gas. This demonstrates that the conventional BEC picture is inapplicable in an interacting 2D atomic gas, in s...

Current experiments on atomic gases in highly anisotropic traps present the opportunity to study in detail the low temperature phases of two-dimensional inhomogeneous systems. Although, in an ideal gas, the trapping potential favors Bose-Einstein condensation at finite temperature, interactions tend to destabilize the condensate, leading to a superfluid Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinskii phase wit...
متن کاملEvidence for Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless transition in atomically flat two-dimensional Pb superconducting films
We report results from scanning tunneling microscopy and transport measurements on a series of crystalline lead films containing an integer number of atomic layers, and find that the observed features in sufficiently thin films are consistent with Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless (BKT) physics. Specifically, Cooper pairing and superconductivity disappear at two distinct temperatures; the current...
متن کاملIntroduction to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless Transition
This essay examines the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thousless transition in the two-dimensional XY model. It is an imporant example of phase transitions occuring without an ordered phase or symmetry breaking, and introduced topological ideas into the concerns of condensed matter physicists.

We describe a recent experiment performed with rubidium atoms (87Rb), aiming at studying the coherence properties of a two-dimensional gas of bosonic particles at low temperature. We have observed in particular a Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless (BKT) type crossover in the system, using a matter wave heterodyning technique. At low temperatures, the gas is quasi-coherent on the length scale set b...
